Afghan Taliban and Pakistani Forces Report Numerous Deaths in Recent Border Fighting

Frontier Conflict Escalate
Islamabad Armed Forces and Taliban Government Blame Each Other of Starting Attacks in the Afghan Frontier Region of Spin Boldak

New hostilities erupted along the Afghanistan-Pakistan frontier early on Wednesday morning, with each side accusing the other of initiating lethal clashes.

The Pakistani armed forces announced that its forces had killed "fifteen to twenty Afghan Taliban" and injured many in the Spin Boldak district frontier area.

A Taliban government representative said that twelve non-combatants had been fatally struck and over a hundred wounded by Pakistani firing. He further stated that several military personnel had been lost their lives. Not one of the alleged fatalities could be independently confirmed.

Violence between the neighbouring countries has escalated since explosions rocked Afghanistan last week, which Kabul attributed on Pakistan. The Taliban deny claims that it is sheltering militants aiming at Pakistan.

Online Platforms and Military Confrontations

The opposing forces are not only fighting for the upper hand on the border, but also on social media, trying to persuade the public that their faction is inflicting greater losses.

The latest clashes follow severe cross-border confrontations over the weekend, when the Taliban claimed to have killed fifty-eight members of the Pakistani military and Islamabad said it neutralized 200 "Taliban and linked terrorists". The reported casualty figures announced by both parties could not be independently verified.

A few days of unstable calm that had persisted since the weekend were shattered on Wednesday morning.

Local Reports and Impact

Videos purportedly of the conflict and its aftereffects have been circulated online and on social channels, including footage claiming to be of those killed and grainy shots from night vision cameras claiming to be of check posts demolished. These videos have not been authenticated.

A source in the border area in Afghanistan reported that fighting erupted at around 04:00 local time (11:30 p.m. GMT on the previous day). Another local in the district, who lives about a short distance away from the frontier post, reported that "intense hostilities persisted for almost several hours".

"I see unmanned aircraft and fighter planes flying over us, some of our relatives are wounded," they said.

A doctor in one of the medical facilities in Spin Boldak stated that he counted "7 fatalities and thirty-six wounded brought to the hospital", including men, females and children.

The situation were "tense" and additional victims were being transferred to hospital, he noted.

Evacuations and International Reactions

A local Taliban official in Spin Boldak stated that "numerous of families have been displaced since the previous evening due to the heavy fighting". He mentioned they were on "high alert" after a several Taliban posts were attacked by aircraft from Pakistan. He further indicated that they had the remains of two Pakistani military members.

In a distinct night-time engagement on Pakistan's western border, the Islamabad's forces claimed that 25 to 30 militant and Pakistani Taliban fighters were "believed" to have been eliminated.

The clashes have prompted calls for reduced tensions from foreign nations including China and Moscow, as well as a suggestion from the American leader that he could intervene to broker a ceasefire.

On that day, Richard Bennett, United Nations representative on the conditions of civil liberties in Afghanistan, posted on a social media platform that he was "deeply concerned" by accounts of civilian casualties and evacuations because of the fighting.

"I call on all parties to practice the utmost caution, protect civilians, and follow global regulations," he wrote.

Long-Standing Disputes

Islamabad has long alleged the Taliban authorities of permitting the Pakistani militants to operate from their territory and battle against the Pakistani administration in an effort to impose a strict Islamic-led system of rule.

The Taliban leadership has always denied these allegations.
